Suzu (Supakarn Masunthasuwan) is a Kyoto-based artist and illustrator who creates bold character-driven artworks that blend together modern and retro styles. Suzu works in mixed media, comfortably alternating between traditional and digital techniques, and she enjoys experimenting with risograph and other retro printing methods. Her works range from vibrant, colorful illustrations that reference 90’s manga and pop culture, to more evocative monochromatic visuals, exploring fringe subcultures, the occult and the risqué.

PUZZMATE x Suzu: You Complete Me (2022)
Illustration for Hong Kong-based puzzle company PUZZMATE’s “You Complete Me” campaign. The phrase "you complete me" might trigger thoughts of love or some other kind of emotional fulfillment. I want to illustrate that emotion in a playful way. In a setting inspired by retro Japanese shops, a girl is in front of a gacha machine, assembling a plastic figure. Towards the background stands another person, resembling the earlier plastic figure, is also collecting parts and assembling his own plastic figure that looks like the girl. Both of them are trying to complete each other, without noticing each other. Things may look normal from a distance, but as you put the puzzle pieces together, repetition that reflects the characters' obsessive feelings for each other can be noticed... Digital artwork, 380 x 520 mm.

Kyochaen MIYAKO: Kabuse (2022)
Artwork for Kyochaen MIYAKO — a Japanese tea shop in downtown Kyoto. Part of a series containing 6 illustrations, each based on a type of tea served at the shop. The visual aesthetic is inspired by Japanese tea export crates during Meiji and Taisho eras. A woman bears a big umbrella, overcasting shadow over the tea plant. Kabuse-cha is a type of tea in which the leaves are shaded from the sun a few days before its harvest, and so the growing process is depicted subtly in this artwork. Digital artwork, 364 x 515 mm.
Kyochaen MIYAKO: Matcha (2022)
Artwork for Kyochaen MIYAKO — a Japanese tea shop in downtown Kyoto. Part of a series containing 6 illustrations, each based on a type of tea served at the shop. The visual aesthetic is inspired by Japanese tea export crates during Meiji and Taisho eras. Matcha is famous for its role in tea ceremonies and is usually paired with Japanese sweets called wagashi. The lush green in stark contrast with pink and red in the artwork reflects both clashing and harmonious colours and flavours of slightly bitter matcha and sweet wagashi. Digital artwork, 364 x 515 mm.

Artwork for Kyochaen MIYAKO — a Japanese tea shop in downtown Kyoto. Part of a series containing 6 illustrations, each based on a type of tea served at the shop. X I X (2022)
“The Sun is adored by many. Her dance beautiful and hypnotic, her presence radiant and dazzling. So bright so that it’s blinding, scorching everything pitch black and consumes all that exists. Just like the despair that comes with dreams.” Part of the BLACKSUN comic, this illustration is inspired by the meaning of the Sun arcana in tarot (number XIX in the deck). Normally representing success and optimism, in reversed the Sun symbolises depression and negativity. While she shines hope upon her worshippers, the Sun wears a sad expression on her face, hinting at the darkness within her existence. Limited risograph print, 297 x 420 mm (A3), signed and numbered. Available for purchase. Please DM Suzu’s Instagram for more info.
Kyochaen MIYAKO: Kyo Bancha (2022)
Artwork for Kyochaen MIYAKO — a Japanese tea shop in downtown Kyoto. Part of a series containing 6 illustrations, each based on a type of tea served at the shop. The visual aesthetic is inspired by Japanese tea export crates during Meiji and Taisho eras. Kyo Bancha looks very distinct from other types of tea; it’s made from larger, coarser leaves and so resembles fallen leaves during autumn. It’s smokey aroma and charred look is reinterpreted and reflected through the fiery red hues and Kyoto’s autumn scenery. Digital artwork, 364 x 515 mm.
