Year of the Dragon

A scarf design to celebrate 2023, the year of the dragon.

I See You in My Dream

This illustration is created for Illustration Taipei 2023 contest under the concept of 'My song list' -- music as a creative power.

Everybody has a special song that inspires them to compost their own melody.
Anything can serve as this ‘song’ -- from a memorable experience to a summer-break
trip to little things in everyday life. This song is a gift from our very own artistic muse
and will never be taken away. Whenever it is played, the door to endless creativity
opens. And the stage is everywhere.
This piece represent my everyday creative life, where my special song ‘shines’ and
vivifies every simple moment with the dreamy realm it brings, seamlessly connects
both worlds together. Elements that have been my inspiration in the past few years
are included, such as architecture and vintage furniture, the rooftops of Paris, and my
3-eye ginger cat character who has become dear to me and is now an essential part
in my work.

Pinniee's Curio Cabinet

My interest in art and all things mystic began with the random trinkets and items my family have collected over decades. I used to bring them out of the cabinets and drawers and just admired them for hours, picturing all the places they had been before. I don't have my own cabinet in real life (yet), but for now I'm happy to have it in my drawing paper.

The Last Journey II

I often wonder how would the afterlife be. The possibilities are endless, but one vision that always comes to my mind is of the last journey where the beloved spirit is being accompanied towards the unknown, just like the traditional Chinese funeral that I'm used to.
Last year I only created the characters, but later I decided to add some context to the picture with the afterlife scene from my imagination -- a nice house and all the good things we send through the flame to the other side of the bridge, where the soul is finally at peace.

Weather Lotto

I love spending time in the wild. Every year I do a couple of long-distance hikes where I camp in the mountains for a few days. The days are tiring and the nights are uncomfortable, but the views are rewarding. Having said that, many times I turn back disappointed because the weather is bad. It's not always predictable and often changes rapidly, even with the weather forecast app in hand.

Last month I spent days camping near a mountain, waiting for a suitable weather window to go up. One day the weather looked promising, so I hiked 8 km from my tent to the foot of the mountain, but it started to rain and suddenly I couldn't see the top anymore. Deflated, I hiked back to my tent and spent the afternoon drinking tea in my sleeping bag.

That day I didn't win the weather lotto, but it was fine.

The Invitation

This year I had a chance to participate in the Seoul Illustration Fair. I decided to create a special artwork inspired by 'haetae', Seoul's beloved mascot. He's been invited to hang out in the world I dreamed up with Sunmeow, my ginger cat character.

The Rose Keeper

With eyes that see what none may know,
Her secrets bloom, but never show.
To graves they sink, in earth they lie,
Unspoken words beneath the sky.
Wrapped in feathers, cold and black,
She carries them, no turning back.
Yet in her hands, the weight is there,
A heart once open, cloaked in care.

Night at the Antique Store

My cat often runs around and meows a lot in the evening. Sometimes there are small bugs outside, but sometimes it feels like he's just talking to the wall.

Most of the furniture in my house are thrifted. I wonder if there are spirits living in those old furniture and my cat has been playing with them.
Then I started to think of all the used furniture store I've bought from. Given the amount of old items, I'm sure their cats enjoy some after-hour feast every night.

Saola

A tribute scarf design to the saola, one of the rarest species in the world, in collaboration with my client.

Sunmeow

My cat character in a more stylised version -- my first experience with risograph! The color planning was challenging but I was happy with the result.
