〈 Artist Statement 〉
Plants sprouting from the body,
contrasting materials and entities coexisting in forms separated from their original context—
Through these surreal and symbolic images,
I attempt to visualize the ambiguous feelings and inner worlds that can’t be fully captured by language.
Human beings are complex, contradictory, and multifaceted.
I believe that this very complexity holds the essence and potential of our humanity.
Through my work, I depict motifs that deviate from socially defined norms of “normalcy” or “beauty.”

The figures in my work are intentionally expressionless, resisting reduction to any one emotion.
In doing so, I hope they become open vessels, capable of resonating with each viewer’s internal landscape and inviting diverse interpretations.

In my Palm

2021 / 53 × 45.5 cm / Mixed media (pen, pencil, acrylic, and Gansai [Japanese mineral pigments] on watercolor paper) /
In this piece, I focused on the universal motifs of hands and flowers,
portraying love and embrace tinged with a quiet sense of longing,
and a faint shadow that lingers just beneath the surface.

Bridge of Dreams

2023 / 39 × 29 cm / Mixed media (pen, pencil, transparent watercolor, and sumi ink on Kent paper) /
This piece is inspired by a dream I once had,
depicting an ambiguous, hollow world where it is impossible to tell
whether one is in reality or in a dream.
In my dreams, a gentle river is always flowing.

Mirror

2024 / 26 × 17 cm / Mixed media (pen, pencil, transparent watercolor, Gansai [Japanese mineral pigments], and acrylic on Kent paper) /
This piece is themed around ‘the you reflected in the mirror.’
It can be a reflection of myself, or a portrait meant for the viewer.
The background serves as a mirror of the inner mind and thoughts.

Pipe dream

2023 / 38 × 21 cm / Mixed media (pen, pencil, transparent watercolor, acrylic, gesso, and Gansai [Japanese mineral pigments] on Kent paper) /
This piece is themed around unrealistic dreams and fantasies.
Even the woman lost in her reverie cannot tell whether they are real or illusions.
These dreamlike visions stretch and spread like tangled vines.

Petrichor

2025 / 18 × 14 cm / Mixed media (pen, pencil, transparent watercolor, Gansai [Japanese mineral pigments], and gesso on antique paper) /
Petrichor is the scent of the earth on a rainy day.
At the start of the rainy season, I find the beauty of raindrops
to be deeply similar to the quiet ache of the human heart.
This piece was created to evoke a fragrance that lingers in the air.

Reverie

2025 / 18 × 14 cm / Mixed media (pen, pencil, and Gansai [Japanese mineral pigments] on Kent paper) /
This piece explores drifting reveries and the unfolding of thought.
By allowing my fingers to move as my thoughts expand,
I questioned what it means to give form to imagination—
and what drawing truly is.

Pensive

2025 / 14 × 18 cm / Mixed media (pen, pencil, and Gansai [Japanese mineral pigments] on watercolor paper) /
This piece takes the abstract theme of giving form to imagination
and expresses it through tangible elements such as the human figure and plants.
It conveys a gentle flow of air, a quiet humidity, and an enveloping stillness.

So Far Away

2022 / 116.7 × 91 cm / Pen and pencil on Kent paper /
This piece explores the themes of love and loss—
subjects that strike at the very core of my being.
Love carries with it both longing and sorrow,
while loss turns our thoughts toward those who have grown distant,
both physically and emotionally.
It is a work meant to gently embrace the quiet pain each person carries.

Blurred Memories

2023 / 22.7 × 15.8 cm / Mixed media (pen, pencil, acrylic, and Gansai [Japanese mineral pigments] on Kent paper) /
This piece is centered on the theme of being lost.
It is unclear whether the setting is a deep forest or the depths of thought itself.
I sought to express the sensation of my own self splintering apart,
or perhaps merging into another,
until everything becomes as indistinct as fading memories.

Woolpit Green childs

2019 / 15 × 30 cm / Mixed media (pen, pencil, and transparent watercolor on antique paper) /
This piece is inspired by The Green Child,
a novel based on an incident said to have occurred in England around 850 years ago.
Through the two children—a boy and a girl—
I sought to capture the feeling of being immersed in a mysterious, utopian world,
while weaving subtle antique nuances into the details.
