Hi! I’m Nurulaila Fitriyani :-) i’m a Salatiga-based illustrator & maker from Indonesia, and the heart behind Starry Shrimp Studio: my artsy-crafty art label where i’ve been whipping up handmade knickknacks and colorful drawings since 2012!

Starry Shrimp is where i let my feelings and imagination run wild. I draw and sew everything from scratch. The name is a cheeky nod to my shrimp allergy. If i can’t eat ‘em, i might as well immortalize them in art and turn them into tiny treasures ;D

I’ve been obsessed with drawing since kindergarten and eventually leveled up my craft at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta, where i sharpened my skills and embraced my weird. Since then, I’ve had the joy of working with Netflix, Instagram, Tinder, Rumah Atsiri Indonesia, Piturooms Hotel, and a bunch of awesome local creative / brands (and counting). I also took part in Artjog from 2014-2019 as an Artist Merchandiser, exhibited with Krack! Printmaking Studio at Art Jakarta in 2023, and was one of the official artists at JICAF (Jakarta Illustration & Creative Arts Festival) the same year.

I love illustrating whatever tickles my brain, from playful patterns to dreamy characters, creating work for myself, commissions, collabs, and collectible art drops. My illustrations live in the magical space between childhood memories and grown-up feelings, a mix of nostalgia, whimsy, and a dash of stardust.

Mushroom Party

This illustration was created for a fun prompt by @stillherestilllife and @studioarhoj in February 2023. It was part of a playful challenge that inspired me to experiment and enjoy the process.

Piece of Cake

"Piece of Cake" is an illustration created for a collaboration with Perfume Republic. The artwork reflects the sweet, playful, and girly scent of their Piece of Cake perfume. I designed the illustrations for both the packaging box and the bottle, capturing the fun and charming personality of the fragrance.

GiRRRRRRL

I draw myself in six different looks, each one capturing a unique style but still the same version of me. This piece is a playful exploration of patterns and self expression, challenging the idea that what we wear should define how we feel. Sometimes, we stay the same inside. No matter how different we look on the outside.

Pandemic Peeps

This is a spontaneous drawing i made during the 2022 pandemic. I live in Salatiga - Central Java, a small town surrounded by mountains and forests, and these characters came to mind as i reflected on how quiet the world felt back then.

Silhouette Savage

“Silhouette” is a music album by Savage, a hardcore band from Indonesia. I created the artwork for both the album cover and their t-shirt. The dreamy, psychedelic visuals and animal characters are designed to represent each of the band members.

Almost 30

My illustration contribution for A Spoonful of Sugar in Your Cup of Tea: Reflections on Colonialism and Discrimination; a book project by Pustaka Pias, Small Fry Collective, and the British Council's Connections Through Culture Grant Programme. This collaborative art initiative seeks to create meaningful impact by celebrating minority communities in both Indonesia and the UK.

Pure Procrastinator

I’m a sleeping beauty who loves to procrastinate on drawing deadlines, often dreaming of a fairy cradling a cat on a strawberry moon.

Lost and Found

Sometimes, when i’m sewing my merch, i forget where i last placed my needle or where i put the scissors. My cats often run off, chasing another cat, getting into fights, or maybe meeting their soulmate. And sometimes, i lose myself too. But just like my cats, i always find my way back, guided by the people, spaces, and moments that hold me up and help me return to who i truly am.

Time Goes By

An illustration i created for LoON’s music album—an indie pop band from Indonesia. The artwork reflects the spirit of young people going through their quarter-life crisis, wrapped in cheerful colors and playful visuals. It’s about the bittersweet journey of love, the ups and downs, the late-night hangouts, and the unforgettable memories made with sweet friends. Even when life gets confusing, there’s still joy in just living it.

Udang di Balik Batu

“Udang di Balik Batu” (literally “a shrimp behind the rock”) is an Indonesian idiom that suggests there’s something hidden or suspicious behind someone’s kindness, usually hinting at a secret agenda or ulterior motive. It’s similar to English phrases like “too good to be true” or “what’s the catch?” For this project, i created an illustration for a children’s picture book written by Tascha Liudmila. Unlike the idiom’s usual meaning, the story flips the expectation—it’s about pure, sincere kindness with a sweet twist at the end. A gentle reminder that sometimes, good intentions really are just that.
