Rachel Ong (WE!) works primarily in watercolour and coloured pencils, her practice explores modern feminist issues through nature-based metaphors. By integrating scientific diagrams, nerve cells, and floral motifs, WE! maps the female psyche while critiquing patriarchy and capitalism from a social and eco-feminist perspective. These heavy themes are juxtaposed against the female form, reinterpreted through a campy, surreal, and drag-inspired lens.

The Contortionist

We Are Watching

A social experiment found that people are less likely to commit crimes where there are pictures of realistic human eyes stuck around the perimeter. Being inspired by that, I drew ‘attractive’ parts of a woman’s body in front of the eye.

My main motive was to dissect the body to simulate objectification. But by placing an eye behind the body parts, the viewer cannot help but notice that they are being watched as well. It gave the feeling of a reverse objectification but also i hoped it made the viewers with bad intentions feel a bit threatened (theoretically anyways).

My Sugar Cookie Heart

Girls Get Shit Done

Inspired by Artemisia Gentileschi

Reflection of Truth

A story of a mermaid realizing she doesn't look like a human, and can never be one.

Protect the Children

An artwork created for a charity that supports children of domestic and sexual violence.

Treeth

Based on a recurring nightmare of mine, occurring especially when I am stressed out before sleep. I would dream that my mouth has rows and rows of teeth, and it would fall out, with many more teeth would overfill my mouth, so much so that I cannot spit the fallen ones out.

The Temple

Based on a recurring nightmare of mine, a vast field with a path leading straight up to a Greek temple, and behind the temple, bust statues would talk and make fun of me.

The Invisible Struggle

You Go Girlfriend
