Vilara: The Treatise of Cat Compassion

This zine is inspired by an Ayutthaya-era manuscript that classified cats as either “auspicious” or “inauspicious” for their owners.

In today’s world, where stray cats are abundant, I wish to emphasize that every cat—regardless of appearance—deserves love and care.

This zine therefore merges both the “auspicious” and “inauspicious” cats from the original text to convey that every life has value.

This collaborative publication was awarded at BKKIF 2025 by Spacebar Zine, an independent bookstore dedicated to supporting and advancing Thailand’s publishing and zine community. The project was developed as a collaboration with Spacebar Zine, bringing together shared interests in independent publishing and contemporary visual storytelling.

วิฬารตำราเมตตาแมว 

ซีนนี้ได้แรงบันดาลใจจากตำราดูแมวสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ที่มีการแบ่งลักษณะแมวว่าให้คุณหรือโทษแก่ผู้เลี้ยง แต่ในยุคปัจจุบันที่มีแมวจรจัดมากขึ้น ผมอยากชี้ให้เห็นว่าแมวทุกตัวไม่ว่าจะหน้าตาอย่างไรล้วนสมควรได้รับความรักและการดูแล ซีนเล่มนี้จึงผสมลักษณะแมวทั้งที่ให้คุณและโทษในตำราเดิม เพื่อสื่อว่าทุกชีวิตมีคุณค่า

ผลงานชิ้นนี้ได้รับรางวัลจาก Spacebar Zine ภายในงาน BKKIF 2025 โดย Spacebar Zine เป็นร้านหนังสืออิสระที่มุ่งสนับสนุนและพัฒนาวงการสิ่งพิมพ์และซีนของไทย ผลงานนี้จึงเกิดขึ้นจากความร่วมมือระหว่างศิลปินและ Spacebar Zine เพื่อสร้างสรรค์ซีนที่สะท้อนคุณค่าของสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์อิสระและการเล่าเรื่องร่วมสมัย

The Odyssey of Homer

For this project, I created the front and back cover designs, six bookmarks, and eleven interior illustrations for The Odyssey of Homer. In total, the project consists of twenty original illustrations developed over a period of six months.
The visual approach balances fidelity to the original text with a contemporary interpretation, aiming to preserve the spirit of Homer’s epic while allowing room for creative expression. Through this approach, the illustrations seek to present this translated edition as a timeless work that remains engaging for modern readers.
This project was awarded at BKKIF 2025 by Biblio, an independent publishing house dedicated to supporting and advancing Thailand’s book and publishing industry. The commission provided an opportunity to reinterpret one of the world's greatest literary epics through contemporary illustration.
ผลงานชิ้นนี้เป็นการออกแบบปกหน้า–ปกหลัง ที่คั่นหนังสือจำนวน 6 ชิ้น และภาพประกอบภายในหนังสือจำนวน 11 ภาพ สำหรับหนังสือ มหากาพย์โอดิสซี (The Odyssey of Homer) รวมเป็นผลงานภาพประกอบทั้งหมด 20 ภาพ โดยใช้เวลาสร้างสรรค์ร่วม 6 เดือน
แนวทางการออกแบบมุ่งตีความเนื้อหาให้สอดคล้องกับต้นฉบับวรรณกรรม ขณะเดียวกันก็เปิดพื้นที่ให้กับการสร้างสรรค์ร่วมสมัย เพื่อถ่ายทอดมหากาพย์คลาสสิกเรื่องนี้ให้ยังคงร่วมสมัยและสามารถเข้าถึงผู้อ่านในยุคปัจจุบัน
ผลงานชิ้นนี้ได้รับรางวัลจากสำนักพิมพ์ Biblio ภายในงาน BKKIF 2025 โดย Biblio เป็นสำนักพิมพ์อิสระที่มุ่งสนับสนุนและพัฒนาวงการหนังสือและการอ่านของไทย โปรเจกต์นี้จึงเป็นโอกาสในการนำวรรณกรรมคลาสสิกระดับโลกมาตีความใหม่ผ่านภาษาของภาพประกอบร่วมสมัย

The four heavenly kings

This artwork was created as the cover illustration for C+Y Zine, a publication exploring memories of rebirth and the question of why certain places, emotions, or experiences can feel strangely familiar despite never having been encountered before. C+Y Zine was first released at Taipei Art Book Fair 2026, presented in response to the fair's theme, "The Meaningfulness of Everyday Life." The publication invites readers to reflect on how ordinary moments and subtle feelings of familiarity may carry traces of memories that transcend a single lifetime.

The cover depicts the Four Heavenly Kings, the guardian deities of the four cardinal directions, who are widely recognized across Taoist, Theravāda Buddhist, Mahāyāna Buddhist, and Hindu traditions. Rather than presenting them solely as religious figures, the illustration reimagines them as timeless guardians silently watching over the cycle of life, memory, and rebirth.

ผลงานชิ้นนี้เป็นภาพปกของ C+Y Zine ซีนที่สำรวจประเด็นเกี่ยวกับความทรงจำในการเกิดใหม่ และตั้งคำถามว่าทำไมมนุษย์จึงรู้สึกคุ้นเคยกับสถานที่ ผู้คน หรือประสบการณ์บางอย่าง ทั้งที่ไม่เคยพบหรือสัมผัสสิ่งเหล่านั้นมาก่อน ซีนเล่มนี้เปิดตัวและวางจำหน่ายครั้งแรกภายในงาน Taipei Art Book Fair 2026 ซึ่งจัดขึ้นภายใต้แนวคิด "ความธรรมดาทุกวันที่มีความหมาย" โดยเชื่อมโยงแนวคิดของงานเข้ากับประสบการณ์ธรรมดาในชีวิตประจำวัน ชวนให้ผู้ชมตั้งคำถามว่าความรู้สึกคุ้นเคยหรือช่วงเวลาที่ดูเรียบง่าย อาจเป็นร่องรอยของความทรงจำที่เชื่อมโยงข้ามผ่านการเวียนว่ายเกิดใหม่

ภาพปกนำเสนอจตุโลกบาล เทพผู้พิทักษ์ทั้งสี่ทิศ ซึ่งปรากฏอยู่ในความเชื่อของศาสนาเต๋า พุทธเถรวาท พุทธมหายาน และฮินดู โดยตีความใหม่ให้เป็นผู้เฝ้ามองและคอยปกปักรักษาโลกอย่างเหนือกาลเวลา เปรียบเสมือนพยานของวัฏจักรแห่งชีวิต ความทรงจำ และการเวียนว่ายเกิดใหม่

Memory of scent

This artwork serves as the final illustration in C+Y Zine, bringing together the publication's exploration of memory, rebirth, and the unseen connections between human experience and the passage of time.

The image focuses on the memory of scent. Unlike visual or tangible objects, scent cannot be seen or held, yet it possesses the unique ability to transport us instantly to another place, another moment, or another state of mind. The illustration portrays a figure inhaling the smoke of incense, which becomes a gateway into another world, symbolizing the invisible connection between memory, consciousness, and spiritual experience.

The artwork was later developed into an etching print as part of my ongoing exploration of printmaking techniques and material experimentation. Through this process, I sought to discover new ways of translating the same concept across different mediums while expanding my visual language through the physical qualities of etching.

ภาพนี้กล่าวถึง "ความทรงจำของกลิ่น" เนื่องจากกลิ่นเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ไม่สามารถมองเห็นหรือจับต้องได้ แต่กลับมีพลังในการพาเราหวนกลับไปยังช่วงเวลาหนึ่ง สถานที่หนึ่ง หรือแม้แต่ความรู้สึกราวกับได้ก้าวเข้าสู่อีกโลกหนึ่ง ภาพจึงนำเสนอชายผู้สูดดมควันกำยาน ซึ่งควันนั้นค่อย ๆ นำพาเขาหลุดเข้าสู่อีกมิติ เปรียบเปรยถึงสายใยอันมองไม่เห็นระหว่างกลิ่น ความทรงจำ และประสบการณ์ภายในจิตใจ

ต่อมาผลงานชิ้นนี้ได้รับการพัฒนาต่อยอดเป็นภาพพิมพ์ด้วยเทคนิค Etching ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการทดลองค้นหาวัสดุ เทคนิค และรูปแบบการนำเสนอใหม่ ๆ ของผม โดยใช้กระบวนการภาพพิมพ์เป็นอีกภาษาหนึ่งในการถ่ายทอดแนวคิดเดิมผ่านคุณลักษณะเฉพาะของวัสดุและร่องรอยที่เกิดจากการกัดแม่พิมพ์

Moirai

This artwork reinterprets the Moirai (The Fates), the three goddesses of destiny in Greek mythology, through a contemporary visual language. Traditionally, the Moirai spin, measure, and cut the thread of every human life, symbolizing the inevitability of fate.

ผลงานชิ้นนี้นำเสนอการตีความใหม่ของเทพีมอยไร (Moirai หรือ The Fates) เทพีทั้งสามแห่งโชคชะตาในตำนานกรีก ผ่านภาษาภาพร่วมสมัย เดิมทีเทพีมอยไรมีหน้าที่ปั่น วัด และตัดเส้นด้ายแห่งชีวิตของมนุษย์ เปรียบเสมือนผู้กำหนดชะตากรรมที่ไม่อาจหลีกเลี่ยง

Apollo and Daphne

This artwork is a contemporary reinterpretation of Apollo and Daphne, one of the most well-known myths from Greek mythology. Rather than retelling the narrative in its traditional form, the work reimagines the relationship between the two characters through a shift in gender, inviting new perspectives on identity, desire, power, and agency.

By altering the gender of the protagonists, the artwork moves beyond a literal adaptation of the myth and opens space for contemporary interpretations that reflect the diversity and complexity of today's society. Through the combination of classical mythology and a modern visual language, the work explores how ancient narratives continue to evolve, allowing timeless stories to resonate with new meanings across different generations.

ผลงานชิ้นนี้เป็นการตีความใหม่ของตำนาน Apollo and Daphne ผ่านมุมมองร่วมสมัย แทนที่จะถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวตามต้นฉบับ ผลงานเลือกเปลี่ยนเพศของตัวละคร เพื่อเปิดพื้นที่ให้เกิดการอ่านความหมายใหม่เกี่ยวกับอัตลักษณ์ ความปรารถนา ความสัมพันธ์เชิงอำนาจ และเสรีภาพในการกำหนดตัวตน

การเปลี่ยนแปลงดังกล่าวไม่ได้มุ่งลบเลือนเรื่องเล่าดั้งเดิม แต่เป็นการตั้งคำถามว่าตำนานสามารถถูกตีความใหม่ให้สอดคล้องกับบริบทของโลกปัจจุบันได้อย่างไร ผลงานจึงผสมผสานสัญลักษณ์จากตำนานกรีกเข้ากับภาษาภาพร่วมสมัย เพื่อสะท้อนว่าเรื่องเล่าคลาสสิกยังคงมีชีวิต และสามารถสร้างบทสนทนาใหม่กับสังคมในแต่ละยุคสมัยได้

The Cupid Vine

The Cupid Vine was developed as the signature artwork representing my participation in the Jakarta Illustration & Creative Arts Fair (JICAF) 2026, an opportunity awarded through BKKIF 2025.

The artwork places Cupid at the center of the composition, depicting the figure in multiple poses that can be discovered from different viewing angles. Inspired by the recurring presence of Cupid in Western art, where the figure often appears as a secondary or supporting character, this work reimagines Cupid as the primary subject. By shifting the focus toward the god of love, the illustration explores how a familiar mythological figure can be reinterpreted through a contemporary visual language, inviting viewers to engage with the image through movement, perspective, and repeated observation.

Written by Saraswati is one of the three key artworks selected to represent my participation in the Jakarta Illustration & Creative Arts Fair (JICAF) 2026.

The artwork was developed in response to the fair's theme, "CONTINUUM," exploring the continuous transmission of knowledge, stories, and artistic traditions across cultures and generations. Inspired by Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, and the arts, the composition reflects on writing as a universal medium through which ideas are preserved, transformed, and shared.

By bringing together mythological symbolism and contemporary visual language, the work highlights how cultural exchange is an ongoing process. Every act of writing, reading, and creating becomes part of an ever-evolving continuum, where traditions are continuously reinterpreted and given new meaning.

Dance by The Muses

Dance by the Muses is one of the three key artworks created to represent my participation in the Jakarta Illustration & Creative Arts Fair (JICAF) 2026.

The artwork responds to the fair's theme, CONTINUUM, by exploring the interconnected nature of artistic expression. Inspired by the Muses of Greek mythology, it suggests that art does not exist solely as an image but extends across multiple forms of perception—including sound, taste, touch, movement, and emotion.

Plant by Phosop

Plant by Phosop is one of the three key artworks created to represent my participation in the Jakarta Illustration & Creative Arts Fair (JICAF) 2026.

Created in response to the fair's theme, CONTINUUM, the artwork explores the relationship between art, place, and materiality. Inspired by Phosop, the Thai deity associated with abundance and agricultural fertility, the work reflects on how artistic expression is shaped by the environments and materials from which it emerges.

By combining mythological symbolism with a contemporary visual language, the illustration suggests that art is inseparable from its context. Just as plants grow in response to the land that nourishes them, artistic practices evolve through local materials, cultural traditions, and the unique conditions of each place. The work presents creativity as a continuous process of adaptation, rooted in its surroundings while constantly developing into new forms.

เมธัส แก้วดำ (เกิด พ.ศ. 2543 เชียงใหม่, ประเทศไทย) จบศึกษาในคณะนิเทศศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย เริ่มทำงานศิลปะแนวปะติด หรือ คอลลาจ (Collage) จากความสนใจในประเด็นทางการเมืองตั้งแต่ปี 2563 และพัฒนาเรื่อยมาจนเปิดบัญชีอินสตาแกรมในชื่อ ‘Cerebrum_art.original’ ซึ่งได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากเซรีบรัม (Cerebrum) สมองส่วนหน้าขนาดใหญ่ ที่ทำหน้าที่หลายประการ ทั้งการเคลื่อนไหว ความคิด ความจำ อารมณ์ การตอบสนอง และการรับรู้ เหมือนกับศิลปะแบบคอลลาจที่รวมเอาความหลากหลายและแตกต่างเข้ามาอยู่ด้วยกันอย่างลงตัว ผลงานทุกชิ้นใน Cerebrum_art.original เกิดมาจากการนำเอา ความชอบส่วนตัวในเรื่องตำนานเทพปรกรณัม และวรรณกรรม มาผสม- ผสานเข้ากับบริบทปัจจุบัน สร้างสรรค์เป็นภาพล้อเชิงสัญลักษณ์ (metaphor) เพื่อเล่าเรื่องที่ดูย้อนแย้งและแปลกประหลาดของสังคม ผ่าน องค์ประกอบที่ดูไม่เข้ากัน แต่กลับอยู่รวมกันอย่างแนบเนียนผ่านศิลปะ แบบคอลลาจ เมธัสเชื่อว่า เราทุกคนต่างมีคำถามเกี่ยวกับความหมายของชีวิตที่ไม่สามารถตอบได้ เช่น เรามีตัวตนจริงหรือไม่ ตายแล้วไปไหน และเกิดมาทำไม แต่คำตอบของคำถามที่กล่าวมาทั้งหมดไม่ใช่ประเด็น วิธีการแสวงหาคำตอบโดยใช้ศรัทธาต่างหาก คือสิ่งที่น่าสนใจ ดังนั้น งานที่เมธัสสร้างสรรค์ขึ้น มักเกี่ยวข้องกับความเชื่อ ทวยเทพ ศรัทธา และความเป็นมนุษย์ เพราะหลายคำถามที่กล่าวมาข้างต้นคงมีเพียงสิ่งที่เหนือกว่าเราเท่านั้นที่ตอบได้ แต่สุดท้ายแล้วสิ่งที่เหนือกว่าเราอาจจะมีเพียงตัวเราที่เหนือกว่าเท่านั้น หากคุณสนใจจะร่วมเดินทางเพื่อหาวิธีการที่ได้มาซึ่งคำตอบ สามารถติดตามได้ที่อินสตราแกรม “Cerebrum_art.original” ชื่อที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยศัพท์วิทย์ แต่ภายในบรรจุงานศิลป์ที่พูดถึงศรัทธา และทวยเทพ โดยเลือกตีความใหม่และนำเสนอให้ร่วมสมัย Mathus Kaewdum ( born in 2000, Chiang Mai, Thailand ) Mathus graduated from the Faculty of Communication Arts, majoring in Journalism, Chulalongkorn University. The start of assortment arts or collage Art is originally out of Mathus’s own interest in presenting political matters since 2020. Until then, it has developed into an Instagram account ‘Cerebrum_art.original’. The inspiration of the name is from a part of the brain, Cerebrum. The large forepart, which functions movements, thoughts, memory, emotion, reaction and recognition, similarly just like Collage art, the science of diversity and variety mixed harmoniously. Every piece of Cerebrum_art.original was inspired by his personal interest in mythology and literature. The process of modification and contextual integration displayed the idea through the form of caricature and metaphor to tell controversial stories through conflicting components yet surprisingly compatible within a piece of collage. Mathus believes that everybody has unanswerable questions about life whether it be purpose of life, existence, and death. But the answers to those questions are not as important as your faithful approaches to them. Therefore, the work created by Mathus is primarily centered around belief, faith, humanity, especially deities since only were those who are superior to humans to answer the unanswerable questions, or were it be humans to answer them on our own?
